(Part 1: Using Argan Oil for your Face?!)
When most of us think of argan oil, we think of shiny, bouncy hair. But did you know it has amazing benefits for your skin, too?
Katharine L’Heureux, founder of Kahina Giving Beauty, explains: “I had been searching for effective organic skincare at the time when I traveled to Morocco in 2007. It was on that trip that I discovered Argan Oil and realized I had found the single ingredient I had been searching for – sustainable, multi-purpose and effective. It was then I decided to create the Kahina line of ethically sourced skincare that honors and gives back to these women”.
Mind = blown.
Since we’ve been using Kahina’s (Ecocert) 100% organic, sustainable argan oil for going on 3 years, we figured it was about time to share, so we put together 6 simple reasons why it’s one of our go-to beauty staples…And we certainly aren’t alone: this simple goodie has been long-loved by a bevy of celebs (from Oprah Winfrey to Donna Karan to Eva Mendes and Heidi Klum)!
1. It’s packed with the good stuff.
Argan oil contains antioxidants, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids.
Says L’Heureux, “With twice the amount of tocopherols (Vitamin E) as in olive oil, and high concentrations of Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, it moisturizes, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restores elasticity and calms inflammation. It also contains plant sterols that actually treat acne and because it isn’t greasy (ie. non-comodogenic) it works well for all skin types”.
2. It will hydrate even the driest skin.
Not only does it seal in moisture, but argan oil also protects skin from free radicals and other damaging effects from the outside environment (i.e. pollution), perfect for when us tropical babies here in Singapore have to brace ourselves for another bout of haze from Indonesia or jet up to the dirty air of Hong Kong and China!
3. It won’t grease up oily skin.
“Argan oil is great for oily skin because it works to actually *control* oil production,” said fellow argan guru (and former top model Josie Maran). “If you deprive your skin of oil, it often goes into overdrive and it can start to overproduce oil. If you use oil on your skin, it balances and neutralizes your natural oil production.”
4. It won’t clog pores.
Yeah, we were worried about putting a pure oil on our faces too. But because it balances out your natural oil production, argan oil can actually help with acne and blemishes. Plus, it’s especially gentle on people with sensitive skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.
5. It’s an anti-ager.
As if this oil isn’t already doing enough, it can also be used as an organic anti-aging serum. Because it’s a concentrated anti-oxidant, argan will protect your skin’s elasticity (perfect for preventive anti-aging in your 20s and 30s if you’re not yet ready to reach for those superpowered serums that we are going to need later in life!).
6. It can be used night and day.
Not only is it light enough to use as a daily moisturizer but also hydrating enough to use as an overnight treatment. Our own little secret: we often use argan oil as one of the most gentle face and eye make-up removers we’ve tried! Three products for the price of one? Sold.
Tips and Tricks for Applying Argan Oil for your Face:
The following procedure should be followed while applying argan oil for face treatment:
- Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry with a cloth until damp. It is important to remember that organic argan oil benefits are maximized when it is applied to damp, not dry skin.
- Take a few drops of argan oil (really all you need is a few!) and apply to the face and neck in a circular motion.
- With moderate pressure, massage the areas that exhibit wrinkles and fine lines.
- Keep the argan oil on your face and other treatment areas for a couple of minutes for the skin to absorb it, then follow up with your usual skin care routine.
